The hook

Do
Start the video after the action has already begun: mid-run, mid-jump, mid-sentence.
Say
…and that's when I realised the door was locked.

The first 3 seconds

  1. 0.0sYou're already moving or mid-sentence: “…and that's when I realised the door was locked.”
  2. 1.5sThe viewer is working out what's going on.
  3. 2.5sOne quick line of context: where you were and why.
  4. 3.0sThey're hooked on the story, not waiting for it to start.

Why it works

There's no 'loading' moment. Dropping in halfway makes the brain want to know what came before.

What you need

  • A story or action that's exciting in the middle
  • Your phone already recording before you start
  • A one-line catch-up to say just after the hook

Step by step

Plan

  1. Find the most dramatic moment of your story and start there, not at the beginning.
  2. Write a short catch-up line for after it, like “Okay, let me back up.”

Film

  1. Start recording 3–4 seconds before you move or speak, so you have room to trim.
  2. Begin at full energy: already running, already laughing, already talking.
  3. Film a few takes that start mid-sentence with different words.

Edit

  1. Trim so the first frame is already mid-movement. No standing still, no breath before the line.
  2. Cut any pause longer than a beat in the first 5 seconds.

Use it in your niche

  • SportsOpen as the ball leaves your hand: “…and the whole gym went silent.”
  • TravelOpen mid-sprint through an airport: “…we had four minutes to make the gate.”
  • SchoolOpen mid-sentence at your desk: “…and then the teacher read my text out loud.”

Pro tips

  • Your first word can be “And” or “So”. It tells the brain it missed something.
  • For vlogs, film one continuous take and cut the start in the edit. Real movement beats acted movement.

Avoid

  • Opening on a greeting, a logo or you pressing record. Those first 2 seconds are where people swipe.
  • Never explaining what happened. Give the context by second 5 or people feel cheated.
