I tried the viral avocado hack

The first 3 seconds

  1. 0.0sThe object is already flying at the lens. No set-up shot.
  2. 0.3sIt fills the screen. Cut on this frame.
  3. 0.4sHard cut to you, already saying the first line.
  4. 3.0sThe viewer knows what you're testing and wants the result.

Why it works

Anything flying at the camera triggers a flinch reflex. The eye locks on before the brain decides to scroll.

What you need

  • Your phone propped at chest height, 1–2 m away
  • Something soft that fits the topic: a sock, a pillow, a piece of fruit
  • Light in front of you, like a window or a lamp

Step by step

Plan

  1. Pick an object from the video itself. Throwing the avocado you're about to test beats a random sock, because it tells the viewer the topic.
  2. Write your first line now, so you can say it the instant after the cut.

Film

  1. Prop the phone at chest height, 1–2 m away. Tap and hold where the object will pass to lock the focus.
  2. Throw gently and underarm, aiming just above the lens so the object fills the frame without hitting the phone.
  3. Do at least 5 throws. Then film your first line from the same spot without moving the phone.

Edit

  1. Trim the start so the object is already in the air in frame one. Cut on the frame where it covers the most screen.
  2. Put your first line straight after the cut, with no pause. A soft whoosh under the throw makes it hit harder.

Use it in your niche

  • FitnessToss a rolled-up towel, then: “The 5-minute finisher I do every day”
  • SchoolToss a notebook, then: “How I revise for a test in one night”
  • GamingToss a cushion, then cut to your screen: “This one setting fixed my aim”

Pro tips

  • Pick an object whose colour stands out from the background, so the blur reads in a split second.
  • Film at 60 fps if your phone allows it. The object stays sharper and the cut looks cleaner.

Avoid

  • Anything hard or heavy. It can crack the lens or knock the phone over.
  • Showing your face before the throw. The flinch only works if the object comes first.
