Impossible Angle
Best for: Sports, skating, cooking, pets
The hook
- Do
- Film from an angle nobody normally sees: from the floor, under glass, inside a cupboard.
- On screen
- Wait for it
The first 3 seconds
- 0.0sA view nobody normally sees: from the floor, through glass, from inside.
- 0.5sCaption: “Wait for it”.
- 1.5sThe action passes right over or past the lens.
- 2.0sCut to a normal angle so the viewer understands what they saw.
Why it works
An unfamiliar view makes the familiar look new, and the brain stops to make sense of it.
What you need
- A safe place for the phone: on the floor, under a glass table, inside a box
- A clear case, a towel or a clear freezer bag to protect it
- Action that passes close to the lens
Step by step
Plan
- Pick an angle that makes something familiar look new: a skateboard rolling over the lens, a pet from below, an egg dropping into a bowl.
- Plan how to protect the phone. Never put it where it can be crushed or get wet.
Film
- Put the phone in place and use the 0.5× lens if you have one.
- Make sure the action passes close to the lens, 20–50 cm away.
- Film a few takes, then film the same moment from a normal angle.
Edit
- Use the strange angle only for the first 1–2 seconds.
- Then cut to the normal angle and carry on.
Use it in your niche
- SkatingPhone on the ground as a board rolls over it: “Wait for it”
- PetsPhone under a glass table as the cat walks across: “The cat, from below”
- CookingPhone looking up from inside a big glass bowl as you crack an egg: “POV: you're the bowl”
Pro tips
- Clean the lens first. Close-up angles show every smudge.
- A clear case or freezer bag protects the phone without blocking the shot.
Avoid
- Putting the phone where it can be stepped on, run over or splashed.
- Staying on the weird angle too long. It's the hook, not the whole video.
