The hook

Do
Show the finished result in the very first frame, then jump back to how you made it.
On screen
This took 6 hours. Worth it?

The first 3 seconds

  1. 0.0sThe finished result fills the frame, at its best angle.
  2. 1.0sThe caption asks the question: “This took 6 hours. Worth it?”
  3. 1.5sHard cut or quick rewind back to the blank start.
  4. 3.0sThe viewer has seen the payoff and stays to see how.

Why it works

The payoff is visible in under a second, so the viewer knows exactly what they get if they stay.

What you need

  • The finished result, cleaned up and in good light
  • A tripod or a stack of books to keep the phone still
  • Clips of each stage, filmed as you go

Step by step

Plan

  1. Decide which single shot shows off the result best: the angle, the light and how close.
  2. Plan 4–6 stage clips so the middle doesn't drag.

Film

  1. Film every stage as you go, from the same spot, even if it feels boring. You can't go back and film step one later.
  2. When it's finished, film the hero shot: 5 seconds of a slow push-in, or the result turning in your hands.
  3. Film one extra clip of the very first moment, like the blank shoe or the empty room, to cut back to.

Edit

  1. Put 1–1.5 seconds of the hero shot at 0:00, then hard-cut to the start.
  2. Speed up the process to 2–4×, and end on the hero shot again so the video loops.

Use it in your niche

  • FitnessOpen on the finished pose, then cut to day one: “12 weeks, no gym membership”
  • CookingOpen on the plated dish, steam rising, then cut to raw ingredients: “Restaurant ramen for $4”
  • RoomsOpen on the finished room, then cut to the mess: “Same room, $60 later”

Pro tips

  • Make the result shot the best-lit, sharpest clip in the video. It does all the work.
  • Ask a question in the caption (“Worth it?”) so people comment their answer.

Avoid

  • Showing the result for too long. After 2 seconds there's less reason to watch the process.
  • A result that looks worse than people expect. Keep filming the hero shot until it looks great.
